About Ghazal

Ghazal Ghazi (b. Tehran, Iran, 1990) is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose life has spanned three distinct regions: the Middle East, the U.S., and South America. As an artist, she investigates collective memory and cultural intervention, exploring themes like displacement, language, and state violence through embroidered oil paintings and ceramics.

Most recently, she was a 2022 Junior Fellow at the Library of Congress, and a semifinalist in the National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2022 at the Smithsonian Institution. She is the recipient of grants from the Puffin Foundation, the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, and the Norman Arts Council, as well was a 2022 Finalist in Visual Art for the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. Her work has been shown in exhibits at the Albin Polasek Museum, Woodbury Art Museum, Rosario Castellanos Museum, MCCLA, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center. She has been commissioned for public art projects by the Arts Council for Long Beach, Boise City, the City of Chandler, the Town of Gilbert, the Town of Sahuarita, Kendall Whittier Main Street, the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County’s Underwater Museum of Art, and the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation. 

 As a writer, she has presented at literary conferences throughout Latin America including Peru, Cuba, Mexico, and Guatemala. In 2019, her first poetry manuscript, La frontera desemboca en ti, was published in Guatemala by Cafeína Editores. Her writing has been published in literary publications in Turkey, Mexico, Chile, Nicaragua, and the U.S. Her second manuscript is forthcoming.
